The process of grading oyster for market has evolved enormously over the past ten years. Present day electronic or photographic machines are the leading technologies in this area. However, the older simpler and much cheaper option of a grading table still work and represents the best option for many smaller growers. These consist of a moving conveyor divided into three/ four corridors. Oysters all arrive onto the outer one and the extremes are picked by hand into the other corridors. In this way the top and bottom perhaps 20% are separated out, forming three grades, yet only 40% of the oysters are actually handled, to achieve this.

The vast percentage of oyster seed in Ireland and increasingly in France is of hatchery origin, due mainly to the increase in the use of Triploids. The grading of this seed to get the maximum growth and performance requires accurate grading of large quantities of small fragile seed with minimum stress. Mulot have developed the in water seed grader to achieve this.

There are one, two or three shaking screens under water sieving the seed which is picked up be elevators form the tank to deliver graded seed to different outlets.

The process of weighing and bagging shellfish is an every day task ranging to the control of quantity of seed going into growing bags to the final preparation of processed product for consumer packs. Mulot have a range of equipment ranging from 30kg bags to 30g consumer packs.

Oyster Bag Filler, is a basic tool to fill oyster growing bags, which stand on a frame. The desired weight is programmed in and once the desired wt is delivered the belt stops. A new bag is put in and the machine started again. It is available with a digital weighing system or a basic spring mechanical balance. Different attachments can be fitted to fill onion bags or other containers used on the farm.
